Okay, so your body is-a-changing big surprise! In the event you’re wondering exactly why some of these changes are occurring, we cobbled together, in my opinion, the Top 3 most common changes, along with some sage advice.

1. Breast Changes: Tenderness, Swelling and Pain

You can expect your breasts to start changing very early on in your pregnancy. Some women suspect pregnancy because of aching growing breasts. Some of the changes you might experience include:

Sensitivity, tenderness and a general achy feeling:

The extra oestrogen and progesterone in your body are to blame for this. The changes and discomforts you may feel are all part of the process of your breasts preparing to feed and nourish your baby. Some women say that the tenderness they experience in early pregnancy is much like the tenderness you feel just before birth – just way more pronounced!

Enlarged breasts:

This too is a result of the extra hormones in your body. Remember to wear bra’s that offer ample support to avoid unnecessary sagging and stretch marks. Your breast will continue to grow as your pregnancy progresses and even more so when your milk comes in

Noticeable blue veins running across your breasts:

These veins are a sure sign that your body is getting ready to deliver fluids and nutrients to your baby. They are noticeable quite early on and will fade once you have stopped nursing

Darkening of areolas and formation of bumps:

There are little bumps on your breasts that become more pronounced during pregnancy. They are called Montgomery’s tubercules. You will also notice that your areolas darken and become noticeably bigger

2. Frequent Urination

Frequent urination is one of the most common pregnancy symptoms. Most pregnant women will feel the urge to go to the bathroom quite often starting as early as 6 weeks into their pregnancy. Part of the reason for this is because their kidneys are working extra hard to flush waste products from their bodies. There is as much as 50% more blood flowing through a pregnant woman’s body so a lot more fluid is going through the kidneys into the bladder. Another reason is of course the pressure that is placed on the bladder by the growing uterus.

3. Abdominal Cramping & Pressure

Any kind of abdominal cramping or pressure can be quite disconcerting to a pregnant woman. It often raises fears about a pending miscarriage or other problems. A good guideline is that as long as the pressure and slight cramping that you are feeling is not accompanied by bleeding, there shouldn’t be cause to worry. So many things could cause you to feel that way including implantation, the growing of the uterus and even just the increased blood flow in your body. If you are really worried it is best to see your doctor. Abdominal pain that is severe and doesn’t go away is a cause for concern. Mother’s often instinctively know when something is wrong.

If you experience abdominal pain later on in your pregnancy and it is accompanied by spotting, bleeding, intense lower back pain, more than four (4) contractions in an hour, or an increase in vaginal discharge you should call you doctor immediately. This could be a sign that you are going into labour prematurely and you will need immediate medical attention.

Remember that not all abdominal discomfort will be directly related to your pregnancy. Other possible causes are food poisoning, stomach virus, kidney stones, gallbladder disease, hepatitis, fibroids, or an obstruction in the bowel. Since there are so many possible causes you will need to go to your doctor to pinpoint the source of the problem.
